17-Day Trek to Khata and East Everest
Base Camp in Tibet

This 12-day adventure combines rich Tibetan cultural experiences with a challenging and scenic high-altitude trek from Old Tingri to Everest Base Camp. Beginning with cultural exploration in Lhasa, the tour continues west through Shigatse and culminates in a 4-day trek through remote villages, mountain passes, and alpine valleys to reach Mt. Everest’s North Base Camp. Ideal for adventurous travelers with good fitness, it offers both deep spiritual encounters and awe-inspiring Himalayan landscapes.

Arrival in Lhasa (3,650 m); Upon arrival at Lhasa’s Gongkar Airport or the Lhasa Railway Station, you will be warmly welcomed by your Tibetan guide and transferred to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day resting and acclimatizing to the high altitude. Avoid strenuous activity and hydrate well to begin adapting to the thin air of the Tibetan Plateau. Overnight in Lhasa

Lhasa Sightseeing – Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Market, Potala Palace; Begin your exploration of Lhasa’s spiritual and cultural heart. Start with a visit to Jokhang Temple, the holiest shrine in Tibet, housing the revered statue of Jowo Sakyamuni. Then walk around the bustling Barkhor Market, a kora route for pilgrims. In the afternoon, visit the iconic Potala Palace, once the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas. Explore its golden-roofed chapels, ancient tombs, and stunning views over Lhasa city. Lhasa Sightseeing – Drepung and Sera Monasteries; Today’s focus is on two of Tibet’s great monastic universities. Visit Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastery in the world with over 10,000 monks, set against a scenic hillside backdrop. In the afternoon, explore Sera Monastery, where you’ll have the chance to observe the famous monk debates in the courtyard, an engaging ritual of philosophical exchange. Overnight in Lhasa

Lhasa to Shigatse via Friendship Highway (3,840 m); Today, travel west from Lhasa to Shigatse along the scenic Friendship Highway, Tibet’s main overland route. You’ll pass through vast valleys, traditional villages, and high-altitude plateaus. On arrival in Shigatse, visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama and one of the most historically significant monasteries in Tibet. Distance: ~280 km | Time: 5–6 hours Overnight: Shigatse

Shigatse to Chutang Village; Leave Shigatse behind and journey to Chutang, the starting point of the Kangshung trek. The drive leads into the wild, rugged landscape of Tibet’s lesser-explored eastern valleys. Upon arrival, meet the local trekking team and prepare for your multi-day hike. Overnight: Camp in Chutang

Trek from Chutang to Shawu Tso (4,600 m); Begin your trek with a gradual climb through alpine meadows and pine forests. The path follows glacial rivers and traditional yak trails, offering views of remote Tibetan scenery. Arrive at Shawu Tso, a peaceful alpine lake surrounded by cliffs and yak pastures. Distance: ~18 km | Time: 4–5 hrs Overnight: Camp

Trek from Shawu Tso to Joksham (4,100 m) via Shawu-La (5,030 m); This challenging day includes crossing the Shawu-La Pass at 5,030 m, your first major high-altitude ascent. From the pass, soak in spectacular views of distant snow-capped ranges. Descend to the forested valley of Joksham, a small traditional herder village. Distance: ~15 km | Time: 5–6 hrs Overnight: Camp

Trek from Joksham to Thangsum (4,300 m); The trail leads deeper into the Kangshung Valley, passing through birch groves, river crossings, and vast yak grazing lands. You’ll encounter few people except nomadic families during the summer months. Camp near Thangsum, a scenic grassy basin. Distance: ~20 km | Time: 5–6 hrs Overnight: Camp

Trek from Thangsum to Petang (4,300 m); Hike through a rugged and dramatic landscape dotted with alpine flora and glacial streams. Gain and lose elevation as you approach Petang, a small highland encampment surrounded by impressive ridgelines. Distance: ~19 km | Time: 5–6 hrs Overnight: Camp

Trek from Petang to Petang Ringmo; A shorter trek today brings you to Petang Ringmo, the last permanent camp before your ascent to the East Everest Base Camp. The scenery becomes increasingly wild, with towering rock faces and hanging glaciers visible in the distance. Distance: ~18 km | Time: 4–5 hrs Overnight: Camp

Trek to Kangshung Base Camp (5,100 m), Return to Petang Ringmo; Today is the pinnacle of the trek: a round-trip to the rarely visited Kangshung Base Camp, also known as Everest East Base Camp. From here, enjoy a close-up view of the Kangshung Face of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu—a panorama unmatched elsewhere on the mountain. After spending time exploring the moraine and glacial basin, return to Petang Ringmo. Distance: ~8 km | Time: 2–3 hrs Overnight: Camp

Trek from Petang Ringmo to Rabgachu (4,300 m); Begin your return trek along a slightly different route, passing new alpine views and perhaps spotting Himalayan wildlife like blue sheep. Camp near Rabgachu, a valley known for its rich flora. Distance: ~18 km | Time: 4–5 hrs Overnight: Camp

Trek from Rabgachu to Tsoshutima (5,000 m); Ascend through rocky terrain to reach Tsoshutima, a high-altitude plateau surrounded by barren cliffs and scattered glacial lakes. Prepare for tomorrow’s final and highest pass. Distance: ~20 km | Time: 5–6 hrs Overnight: Camp

Trek to Lhundrobling via Langma La (5,330 m), Drive to Rongbuk (5,200 m); Cross the awe-inspiring Langma La Pass (5,330 m)—the highest point of the trek—with sweeping views of Everest, Lhotse, and the Kangshung Glacier below. After descending, meet your driver at Lhundrobling and drive to Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world. Distance (Trek): ~16 km | Time: 5–6 hrs Drive: ~60 km | Overnight: Ronbuk Hotel or Guesthouse

Enjoying view of Everest North Base Camp (5,200 m), Drive to Shigatse; standing in the shadow of the world’s highest peak. After exploring, drive back along the Friendship Highway through spectacular Himalayan scenery to Shigatse. Trek: ~6 km | Time: 2 hrs Drive: ~280 km | Overnight in Shigatse

Shigatse to Lhasa via Yamdrok Lake & Karo La; Return to Lhasa, stopping en route at Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s most sacred and beautiful lakes, and Karo La Glacier. The route offers some of the most picturesque drives in central Tibet. Distance: ~280 km | Time: ~6 hrs Overnight in Lhasa

Departure from Lhasa; Your guide will transfer you to Gongkar Airport or Lhasa Railway Station for your onward journey. Farewell and Tashi Delek!

If you require assistance with the visa application process, feel free to contact us for guidance. 2.International Flights – Airfare to and from China or Nepal is not covered. 3.Travel to/from Tibet – Flight or train tickets into or out of Tibet are excluded. If you need help with booking, we’re happy to assist upon request. 4.Single Room Supplement – Tour pricing is based on double occupancy (twin-sharing rooms). If you prefer a private room or room-sharing is unavailable, an additional supplement applies. Please consult your travel advisor for exact rates. 5.Meals Outside Itinerary – Lunch and dinner while in cities, as well as all meals outside of Lhasa and Shigatse, are at your own expense. 6.Tips & Gratuities – Tips for the guide and driver are not included. We suggest budgeting around $7 USD per person per day for both, based on the quality of service received. 7.Force Majeure & Emergencies – Any extra costs due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g. natural disasters, traffic restrictions, lost items, visa or flight delays/cancellations, travel insurance, medical treatment, etc.) are not covered. 8.Personal Expenses – Items of a personal nature such as laundry, souvenirs, phone usage, and similar are not included.
