Many tourists come to Tibet seeking accommodations built in the traditional Tibetan style. However, there are few lodges that truly capture this heritage. One notable exception is the House of Shambhala. Its exterior showcases traditional Tibetan stonework and an authentically old-fashioned design. The roof is crafted from wood, with beams and rafters arranged to keep the interior cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Colorful ornaments and intricate decorative details further enhance the lodge, creating a truly immersive Tibetan experience.
The House of Shambhala is a restored home of a high-ranking Tibetan family. All of its rooms provide guests with the utmost comfort while surrounding them with Tibetan history and tradition.
The rooftop restaurant offers breathtaking views of the Potala Palace, while the warm and inviting first-floor dining area looks out over the quiet alleyways of the ancient quarter. There is no elevator, so all guests need to go up to the upper floors by the stone staircase.
The location is truly in the center of Lhasa city, just a 4–6 minute walk to the very famous Barkhor Street.
On March 19, 2026, I was very proud to have had the opportunity to host a welcome dinner for a VIP couple from Singapore. They greatly enjoyed the Tibetan cuisine. I am happy to write this to help travelers who are seeking an authentic experience in a traditional Tibetan house.
