Tibet is one of the most extraordinary travel destinations on Earth. Known as the “Roof of the World,” the Tibetan Plateau sits at an average elevation of over 4,000 meters, making it the highest region on the planet. Because of this extreme altitude, Tibet has a unique climate that is very different from most places.
Many people imagine Tibet as permanently frozen and harsh. In reality, Tibet has abundant sunshine, dry air, and large temperature differences between day and night. Even in winter, daytime temperatures can feel comfortable under the bright plateau sun. The weather varies significantly across different regions of Tibet. Central Tibet around Lhasa has a relatively mild plateau climate, while the far western Ngari region is colder and drier. The eastern region around Nyingchi is greener and more humid because it is influenced by the Himalayan forests. With the right preparation and clothing, Tibet can be visited throughout the entire year. Each season offers a different experience—from snowy mountains and clear winter skies to lush valleys and colorful autumn landscapes.
This guide introduces the weather conditions, altitude, and travel tips month by month for the main travel regions of Tibet.
